Assistant Coach Dale Westmoreland
“Westy” has been married to his wife Margaret for 47 years. They have two sons, Casey and Layne, both Klein Oak grads and also former KO coaches. Son Clay, also a KO grad, is deceased. He has one grandson, Max.
Coach Westmoreland played at Tyler Lee High School, Paris Junior College and Centenary College in Louisiana.
His first head coaching position was at San Augustine at age 22. He then went to Kilgore and Port Arthur before accepting the head coaching position at Klein Oak in 1989. [It took Dale a good two weeks to completely change the culture of KO Baseball, and one year to make it a winning program. – editorial insertion by Gary Nelson]
Dale led the Klein Oak program for 16 years. He was District coach of the Year six years, All-Greater-Houston Coach of the Year twice, and led the Panthers to the State Finals twice (1991 and 1996). During those years, KO produced major league players Justin Thompson, Kevin Hodges, Trey Hodges, Phillip Stringer, and of course Scott Strickland (a.k.a. Jaden’s dad).
Coach Westmoreland is a former President of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
To say that we are honored by Coach Westmoreland’s willingness to serve as a volunteer assistant for our Panthers is a tremendous understatement. The field on which we play our home games is “Dale Westmoreland Field” because this is the man who made us what we are today!
